DIY laundry or a laundry service: which saves more?
Comparing electricity, water and time costs of doing it yourself versus a pickup laundry service.
Many people assume doing laundry yourself is always cheaper. Once you count your time, it is not that simple.
DIY cost (approx. for 5kg)
- Electricity for washer + dryer: about 8,000–15,000₫
- Water, detergent, softener: about 6,000–10,000₫
- Hanging, folding, putting away: 60–90 minutes
Service cost
At 20,000₫/kg, 5kg costs 100,000₫ plus delivery. In return you get back about 1.5 hours every load.
When does a service make sense?
- You live in an apartment with nowhere to dry clothes.
- You have a baby or elderly family members and lots of laundry.
- Your time is worth more than the difference.
