How to wash bedding properly and get rid of dust mites
How often should you wash sheets, and at what temperature to kill mites? A simple guide for families.
Every night we leave sweat, dead skin and oils on our sheets — the perfect food for dust mites, a common cause of allergies, sneezing and itchy skin.
How often?
- Pillowcases and sheets: once a week.
- Duvets and toppers: every 1–2 months.
- Pillows: every 3–6 months.
What temperature?
Dust mites die above 55°C. If your home machine has no hot-water cycle, tumble dry on high heat for at least 30 minutes.
Quick tips
- Don’t overload the drum — bedding needs room for water to move.
- Dry completely to avoid a musty smell.
- Add a couple of tennis balls when drying down duvets to keep them fluffy.
If your machine is too small for a double duvet, let our bedding cleaning service handle it in a large-drum machine.
